Case Studies
Case study: HONG KONG AIRPORT
When the new Hong Kong Airport at Chek Lap Kok was finished in
1998, it soon became apparent that the new granite concourse floor
could become very slippery in wet conditions.
Grant Ameristone the British architects who managed the construction
of the airport, canvassed 6 companies around the world manufacturing
anti-slip treatment and specified No Skidding Industrial Anti-Slip
Treatment (90378) as the product most suited to their application
and safety standard requirement.
To quote from a letter from the contractor:
“The purpose of this letter is to record our satisfaction
with your Product 90378 which was applied to 1.4 million square
feet of granite flooring and is proving to be extremely effective…the
product had to undergo extremely rigorous quality control checks
from the Airport Authority and passed these successfully”.
In 2004 the Hong Kong authorities re tested the floors and confirmed
they were still compliant with the safety regulations. The airport
receives approx 85 million people per year, meaning that in excess
of 400 million people have crossed the floor since 1998.
Case study: New Forest Commercial Services
Spillage of water and inclement weather was set to become a potential
cause of slip injuries in many public sites throughout the New Forest
District. So finding a solution to the problem was high on the Council’s
list.
Clive Morey, Building & Cleaning Services Manager at New Forest
District Council Commercial Services (NFDC) department, was responsible
for dealing with the problem.
‘Following an impressive demonstration of No Skidding products
to changing room floors at our works depot, we decided to install
No Skidding Anti Slip Treatment in one of the many public conveniences’,
explained Clive, ‘and on the day, treatment time on the tiles
was only 30 minutes which meant that the each toilet area was only
out of use for about 40 minutes, which was a great result.’
The ease of application and improvement in slip resistance was
immediate and there are now plans to treat other public conveniences
in the area. The Commercial Services department is also looking
at No Skidding Products as a solution to other potential floor safety
issues throughout many of the other public properties in the district.
C ase study: East Midlands Health Trust
East Midlands Health Trust had identified a potential major slip
issue with one of the vinyl floors in their senior care department.
If left untreated, this could have led to serious slip injuries
to patients and staff, and therefore needed to be resolved as a
matter of urgency.
Contract Maintenance Group identified Maxiflex as the best product
for the problem. Applied in a similar way to traditional floor treatments,
each coat of Maxiflex took only 15 minutes to dry making it incredibly
quick and efficient.
‘The results of the treatment have been excellent,’
explained a spokesperson for the Trust, ‘the job was carried
out with extreme care, given the sensitivity of the area, and the
slip resistance has been greatly improved.
And because the aesthetics of the floor has not changed, the feedback
from our cleaning services team has been extremely positive too.’
Maintenance of Maxiflex is also very efficient. Heavy traffic
lanes can easily be re-coated without having to retreat the whole
floor, and stripping is only required approximately every three
years.
Case study: WH SMITH
WH Smith had identified a number of its UK Stores as having potential
slip issues in their entrances in wet conditions. Engineering Manager,
Steve Buckingham, was given the task of finding a solution that
offered high levels of slip resistance but that was quick and easy
to apply.
No Skidding Products had been recommended to WH Smith, so CMG
were asked to survey the sites and suggest the best product for
the job given the different floor finishes. It was also important
to determine the level of treatment and time required minimizing
any potential disruption. No Skidding Anti-Slip Treatment was selected
as the most appropriate solution because of its quick and simple
application and excellent results.
Four stores were initially selected with entrances featuring a
variety of finishes ranging from ceramic tile to terrazzo. CMG carried
out the work during normal trading hours, causing no inconvenience
to staff or customers, with the store managers being consulted throughout
the whole process.
‘The results have been superb’, explained Julian from
CMG, ‘and what makes this solution even better is the full
range of No Skidding aftercare products’. Flexclean’s,
ease of use has made the daily cleaning of the treated areas very
simple and unlike some cleaning products, doesn’t compromise
any of the properties of the Anti-Slip treatment.
